All That You Are by Elica Roper is a beautiful coming-of-age novel about forgiveness, recovery, and learning to love again. She created something amazing! I loved all the characters and their dynamics. Sibling bonds, friend bonds, all of it, are great! I enjoyed the alternating first-person views. It’s a refreshing storytelling device. However, this was Roper’s debut novel, so her writing is a little undeveloped, but I do not doubt that she will become an even more fantastic author with time.
The plot centered around following 22-year-old Athena and 25-year-old Caiden. Each has had their fair share of trauma and hardships to deal with. Both struggle with mental health and I like how the author represents mental health differently in each character because mental health isn’t one size fits all.
The characters were very well written, and relatable! For me, there were characters I didn’t necessarily like but that's okay! When I started reading, I didn’t like Athena because she gave off very “I’m Not Like Other Girls” vibes. However, throughout the story, she evolved and became a character that I liked.
The only criticism I have for this book, and the reason it did not receive a full 5 stars from me, was in the beginning the author's writing was a little underdeveloped. However, this changed throughout the book as she grew as an author and writer. Another thing that I didn’t really like was how old Athena and Caiden were because they acted more like 17 and 18-year-olds than 22 and 25-year-olds. However, those are just my opinions and don’t mean that the book wasn’t still very enjoyable, because it was
