“Love can’t kill,” I say parroting Carla’s words
“That's not true,” she says. “Whoever told you that?”
This book broke my heart into tiny pieces and then miraculously put those same pieces back together. (somehow)
The Plot:
My disease is as rare as it is famous. It’s a form of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, but basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, haven't left my house in fifteen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives. New next door neighbors. I look out the window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black t-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. I want to learn everything about him, and I do. I learned that he is funny and fierce. I learn that his eyes are Atlantic Ocean-blue and that his vice is stealing silverware. I learn that when I talk to him, my whole world opens up, and I feel myself starting to change—starting to want things. To want out of my bubble. To want everything, everything the world has to offer.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
The Characters:
Madeline (or Maddy)
Wow, did Maddy have some deep thoughts! She was written so well and I felt like I was right there with her. Maddy was such a realistic character that I loved so much. When she smiled I smiled, when she cried, I cried.
Carla (Maddy’s Nurse)
Omg can I just give Carla a big hug?? She is so sweet to Maddy and is the mom that Maddy never had. I loved her so much!!
Maddy’s Mom
Um anyways moving on-
Oliver (Olly)
The love interest. Could he have been any more perfect? He was sweet, compassionate and of course hot. Like dark haired, sarcastic, traumatic backstory...mmm delicious!
More thoughts
Where is book 2? Like Ms. Nicola Yoon gimme number 2!! You can’t end a book like that period. You don’t end a book in a cliffhanger unless you are planning a number two.
Some quotes
“Her words make me aware that the heart is a muscle like any other, it can hurt”
“Don’t Die,” He says. “I won’t,” I say back
“A promise is only a lie you want to keep”
“The void- A Universe that can wink into existence can wink out again”
Overall: One of the easiest 5 stars I have ever given.
