Mid Year Freakout Book Tag!
Updated: Jul 26, 2022
It is the end of June, which means time for the mid year freakout book tag! I have read 32 books out of my goal of 60 for this year. Not as many as I would like, because I have had a chaotic start to 2022, and have been in a bit of a slump but that's okay! Nevertheless I still wanted to do this book tag, so let's get into it.
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2022

I have to pick? That is so hard! I would have to say The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutoski or The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. Both were amazing, and read in one sitting!
2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2022

So, this is a hard one to answer because I haven’t read many series so far this year. The only sequel I have read (and the best one) is The Elite by Kiera Cass which is the second installment in The Selection trilogy. It didn’t suffer from middle book syndrome and it was a fun read!
3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to

Easy! Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid. This book was just released on June 21 this year. It is a gothic retelling of The Juniper Tree, one of my all time favorite tales. What is even more exciting is that I am being sent a review copy of it sometime this week to read! The cover is gorgeous and I have very high hopes for the book itself as well.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

I have two, because you know me and that I cannot pick. First is Bloodmarked, the sequel to Legendborn! I haven’t actually read Legendborn, but it is on my July TBR so I am very excited to read it and its sequel! The other one is The Final Gambit which is the third and final installment in the Inheritance Games trilogy which is one of my favorites! Very excited to see it all wrap up and for all my questions to be answered.
5. Biggest disappointment

Jay's Gay Agenda by Jason June. I had high expectations for this book and it was just…horrible. I absolutely despised the main character and a lot of the overall plot. The only reason it was a two star instead of only one was because I adored all of the side characters. I do not recommend this though, it really let me down.
6. Biggest surprise

I would have to say The Stand In by Lily Chu. I listened to this as an audiobook, and I was just kind of listening to it as background noise for when doing laundry, work, etc. However, it surprised me! It was a really really good contemporary romance and I loved the plot!
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)

So this author is new to me, but she is one of my new favorites. I recently read The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski and fell in love with her writing. I love the way she writes her characters, the plots and worldbuilding of her stories. Literally everything. Even though I have only read one of her books, I promptly bought many more of her books online that are scheduled to arrive soon, so yay!
8. Newest fictional crush

This is difficult, because I have a lot! But, I think I’m going to go with the one and only Dr. Adam Carlsen from The Love Hypothesis! He is just chef's kiss, a perfect man.
9. Newest favorite character

Charlie from Heartstopper!! He is adorable, and an awesome character. Love him and the Heartstopper series as a whole.
10. Book that made you cry

The One by Kiera Cass. This is the third and final book in The Selection trilogy and it just made me really emotional for some reason. By the end of the book I was sobbing. Kiera Cass really knows how to rip out your heart, crush it, and then gently put it back in, still crushed, but somehow beating. Very good end to the series.
11. Book that made you happy

The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Osterang. This graphic novel was literally so adorable!! I loved it so much. I read this in one sitting, in about an hour. The art and storyline were also stunning, but I didn't expect anything else from this author.
12. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received)

All our Hidden Gifts by Carloine O’Donoghue! This book’s cover is absolutely stunning. I love the art style and how it relates to the book. I did buy this book purely based on the cover, not knowing anything about it. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this book was a really good and fun read! So in this case, judging a book by it’s cover worked very well.
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Literally so many. I have an entire bookshelf dedicated to my physical TBR. I also just ordered 9 books from Thrift Books that will be added to that bookshelf as well. I also have plans to visit Barnes & Noble soon as well as Half Price Books. Yes I have a problem, no I am not ready to deal with it. Nevertheless, I do have high hopes that I can finish at least half of my physical TBR before the end of the year.
Alright! That is all for this book tag. I hope you had as much fun reading this as I had writing it. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Xoxo,
Opal
